About the Relationship:
In June 1985 Shenzhen’s Deputy Mayor, Zhen Xi Pei, visited Houston. During this visit, a preliminary agreement to form a sister city relationship between Shenzhen and Houston was drafted. In October 1989 Shenzhen Mayor Li Hao and a delegation traveled to Houston to attend the signing ceremony hosted by Mayor Kathy Whitmire, officially establishing the sister city relationship between Houston and Shenzhen.
Both Houston and Shenzhen are vibrant components of their region’s economy and international trade. The Port of Shenzhen is one of the busiest and fastest growing ports in southern Mainland China, located in the southern region of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province. Shenzhen is the destination port for trade between Hong Kong and mainland China, and is also one of the most important ports for international trade in the region.
For the past 21 years the Houston-Shenzhen Sister City Association has sponsored many exchange programs related to educational, sports, cultural, and business development exhibitions and events. Some of our future projects include:
2010 – 2012: East Downtown Bastrop Promenade (Shenzhen Garden/Sister Cities Garden/China Gate) Project near Dynamo Stadium in downtown Houston.
August 12 –23, 2011: World University Summer Games in Shenzhen, China..

We welcome individuals and corporations who would like to participate in our events and programs, travel with us to Shenzhen, or experience our motherland, the People’s Republic of China. Several of our members travel frequently to Shenzhen on business and would be glad to provide guidance to any Houston delegation that wishes to visit our city. We look forward to new exchanges between Houston and Shenzhen, especially in the areas of education, medicine and energy!
